Step 1: Collect Documents

    •  Application Form, fully completed.
      • Please Note: By clicking on the application link you’ll be taken to the Chinese consulate’s application form. Please complete the form and send a copy to our office to edit, also upload your photo directly on to the application online- Once confirmed by our office, you’ll need to submit your application form online on the consulate’s website. Once printed, there are two places to sign and date. Do not hand write anything on the application except your signature and the date.

Proof of Travel

    • Provide a copy of your round trip ticket or e-ticket, itinerary, of letter from a travel agency that confirms your entry and exit from mainland China. The document needs to show the applicants name, date of arrival and departure, and whether they are going by flight or cruise.

Proof of Stay

    • If you are staying in a hotel, provide copies of hotel confirmation (if staying in multiple hotels you must provide all confirmations.) Alternatively, you may provide confirmation from a Chinese tour operator.

Invitation Letter

    • If you are staying with a friend or relative provide a signed letter from the host, along with their Chinese ID. (If you are a spouse or sibling of someone on a business trip the host company in China will provide a letter of invitation on your behalf.) Chinese personal invitation

Letter of employment

The Chinese consulate would sometimes ask for a company letter confirming that your trip is solely for tourism and will not involve any business activities related to your place of work. It would be a good idea to have this letter prepared ahead of time to avoid any delays. Your letter must be printed on your company’s stationery and signed by the employer. Your letter would need to include the following information: Job title, Job description, Purpose of travel.

Additional Requirements

  • Applicants whose former nationality was Chinese must submit their original Chinese passport or old visa. If the applicant has acquired a new US passport and there is a Chinese visa in the old passport, submit the old US passport.
  • Non U.S. Passport holders must send in their original or notarized copy of their U.S. Green Card or attached a copy of current visa showing legal status in the USA. In some cases the embassy of China would ask for original Green Card to be submitted.
  • The Chinese consulate may require former citizens of the following countries who have become naturalized in the USA to appear in person for an interview:
  • Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Chad, Cameroon, Republic of Congo, France, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kyrgyzstan, Kenya, Libya, Lebanon, Mali, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka, South Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Yemen.

    The Washington DC. Chinese embassy is jurisdictional and accepts applications from the following states: Washington DC., Delaware, Idaho, Kentucky, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, N. Carolina, N. Dakota, S. Carolina, S. Dakota,Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia an Wyoming.

  • The following states are temporarily managed by the Consulate in Washington DC.
    Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas.

        • Important

    • If you have been previously issued a Chinese visa stamped in your old passport, you need to submit a copy of that passport along with the visa issued in that passport.

Company Letter / Invitation Letter

    • A Business Letter AND a letter of invitation from China (Sample)
    • The business letter must be typed on the company’s stationery stating the following:
      • Addressed to “Embassy of China, Visa Section, Washington D.C.”
      • The applicant’s job title
      • Length of employment
      • A brief description of job duties
      • The type of business expected to perform in China
      • Purpose and date of travel and duration of stay.
      • Financial responsibility for the applicant as well as return transportation to U.S. (if that applies)
      • This letter must be signed by a superior within your company other than the applicant

The processing time may vary and is subject to change without notice by the embassy.

  • Regular: Visas issued within 27-29 business days
    Express: Visas issued within 7-10 business days

Please note that the above timing may change. The Chinese consulate may ask for additional time to review your case before approving your visa.

Please Note: As of November 12th 2014 the Chinese embassy has changed their next day processing to 2-3 days. Also the processing time is at the embassy’s discretion.

Effective May 01, 2003 the Chinese Embassy will not accept visa applications by mail; the applicant will have to appear in person or process their visas through a visa service such as A-1 Passport & Visa Express.

Please note that the above rates apply to most Continental USA. Higher rate applies to Alaska, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and US Virgin Islands. Please note all FedEx envelopes are shipped without a signature requirement, unless requested. A small fee will apply for a signature requirement.
